FAQs

  • I’VE NEVER WRITTEN A SONG BEFORE, BUT WOULD LIKE TO. ARE THE SONGWRITING COURSES FOR ME?

Yes, you’ll be guided through the songwriting process and encouraged to write your own material. You’ll also undertake ‘writing activities’, where you’ll be encouraged to try your hand at professional real-world songwriting briefs.

  • WHAT DOES THE INTRODUCTION TO SONGWRITING COVER?

This course provides you with a solid foundation so you can embark upon your songwriting journey. We recommend you begin here, unless you’re already an experienced writer with at least ten or more songs under your belt. Having mastered Songwriting: The Basics, you can then progress onto our other songwriting courses, which are for intermediate-level songwriters.

  • WILL I LEARN HOW TO WRITE LYRICS?

Yes, lyric writing is an integral part of songwriting and features prominently in this course. If you’d like to progress your lyric writing skills at the end of this course, you might like to consider taking our Lyric Writing course where you’ll explore the craft of lyric development in more detail.

  • WHAT IS SONG CONTENT?

Song content includes all the features that make up a song – like lyrics, meaning, harmony, melody, structure, instrumentation and more. In this course, you’ll explore case studies of the main musical genres and discover how various features are showcased across a particular songwriting style.

  • IS THE CONTENT AND GENRE COURSE FOR ADVANCED SONGWRITERS?

While anyone can take this course and gain valuable insights about genres and Songwriting techniques, the case studies and research you’ll cover will be most useful if you’ve already begun exploring your personal Songwriting identity. So it may best suit intermediate-level songwriters who are curious about unique ways to approach Songwriting and keen to experiment with new writing styles… although all songwriters are welcome.

  • HOW DOES THE CONTENT AND GENRE COURSE CONNECT WITH ICMP’S OTHER SONGWRITING COURSES?

We recommend you take this after completing our Songwriting: The Basics and Songwriting: The Creative Process courses. If you’d like to advance your long-term Songwriting journey, why not purchase all courses together as a Songwriting bundle?

  • HOW DOES A COURSE TEACH ME THE CREATIVE SONGWRITING PROCESS?

Like any writing task, songwriting requires creativity and self expression. While this may come easy to some, creativity is a skill that can be enhanced. You’ll look at creativity as a concept in this course, before focusing on how to apply good creative practices to your own songwriting. From idea generation and breaking out of your musical comfort zone, to exploring deeper topics in your writing, all are necessary if you want to become a highly skilled creative songwriter.

  • WILL I GET TO WRITE TO BRIEF IN THIS COURSE?

Yes. You’ll be encouraged to explore concepts and practices in your own writing sessions, so you can expect plenty of opportunities to write to brief, plus many other creative songwriting activities.

  • What can I expect if I signup for an Elevate course?

Expect something highly engaging! Elevate courses are packed full of interactive learning elements. You’ll have access to video and written lessons, and will use diagrams, case studies and insider hints and tips in your studies. 10 Incredible Songs in 5/4 and 5/8 Time

The 5/4 time signature has an unusual feel. It works by using five quarter notes in a space where four would exist in conventional 4/4 timing. While this makes it rather challenging to dance to most music written in 5/4 timing, you can find yourself tapping along to it when done right.

Music theory defines and underlines any piece of music. It contains the way artists create music and how it’s performed and heard—including the cultural and historical contexts that arise. Likewise, music theory studies the concepts that form the melodies, harmonies, and rhythms of your favourite songs.
