The History of PRS Guitars
The history of PRS guitars dates back to the mid-1980s when Paul Reed Smith founded the company from his home in Maryland, USA.
Smith was a young guitarist at the time, and he’d already gained a robust reputation for meticulous designs and excellent innovation.
However, he had the vision to create a new type of guitar combining modern materials and vintage equipment. And he set out to achieve that mission through his robust entrepreneurial mindset.
The Early Days
In the early days of PRS Guitars, he made his guitars in a small workshop, where he oversaw every aspect of the production. In addition, he experimented with different electronics, woods, and pickups to give the guitars a truly unique sound and feel. Therefore, his attention to quality and detail became second to none.
The First Products
One of the first PRS Guitars to gain mass popularity was the Custom 24, first introduced in 1985. It was a double-cutaway guitar that had a set neck, a carved top, and a patented tremolo system. In the following years, it became a favourite for rock and metal guitarists seeking fast playability and tone.
In 1994, PRS Guitars introduced the CE series, which became one of their most popular guitar series ever. The company aimed the CE series at intermediate players who required a super high-quality instrument without going overboard on their budget. Then, they introduced the Singlecut in 2001; it became a favourite among intermediate players and blues players that wanted a warm tone and classic looks.
In addition to its vast range, PRS Guitars also collaborated with many high-profile musicians to create signature models. One of the most popular signature options is the Santana, a model designed by Carlos Santana. PRS Guitars designed the Santana to have a thicker body with a shorter scale length. In turn, this gives the guitar a truly unique feeling of Santana’s playing style.
The Current Day
Today, the music industry, especially guitarists, regards PRS Guitars as having some of the world’s best instruments. Many musicians use their products, and the company is one of the world’s most prominent in the space.
