The Creative Process
Switch on your songwriting ‘radar’. Start to connect with the world using the senses of a curious artist. Book titles, conversations overheard in bus queues, advertising slogans, TV catchphrases, discussions with friends at the pub, political debates, newspaper headlines, family arguments, Facebook posts, misheard lyrics… ANYTHING and EVERYTHING can become an idea for a song, or perhaps a title or line that inspires an idea. Write it down.
It might be five years before you come back to it, but now it’s there, in black and white, ready to ‘fuel’ a song. Teach yourself to focus your daydreaming time on the bus / train on the way into work or school in the morning, into really connecting with what is going on all around you, and start scribbling! Remember, you are building a library of ideas that you can return to at any point for inspiration, and that will begin to form the foundations of the creative intention from which your songs are going to be built.
